On November 4, 1950, France joined 11 other European nations in signing the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
This convention established the European Court of Human Rights, Europe’s first binding mechanism to protect international human rights. Today it ensures respect for the fundamental rights and freedoms of the more than 600 million citizens of the Council of Europe’s 46 member states.
Seventy-five years after the signing of this convention, France reaffirms its commitment to that founding text that protects fundamental rights.
