Some question Rapid City vote on grant for English learners : immigration

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Some mother and father and academics in Fast Metropolis have been questioning why faculty board leaders determined to not apply for a $30,000 grant that might assist immigrant college students study to talk English.

One faculty board consultant mentioned that if the district accepted the federal grant, it could give the inexperienced gentle for extra immigrants to maneuver to Fast Metropolis, the Fast Metropolis Journal reported.

Board 1st Vice President Gabe Doney informed Meyer in an electronic mail that by accepting the grant, the varsity district was implicitly giving the inexperienced gentle for extra immigrants to maneuver to Fast Metropolis. He made related feedback to the Journal, saying that accepting a federal grant pertaining to immigration “might create an even bigger drawback down the street.”

“Subsequent 12 months is it going to be 100 (college students), or 300? Do we actually need that in Fast Metropolis? $30,000 might flip into $1 million,” Doney informed the Journal. He mentioned one concern is whether or not immigrant college students can be updated on required vaccinations.
