USCIS has issued an important update regarding Form I-693, the medical exam required for many immigration applications, including green cards. If you are preparing to adjust your status or have a pending immigration case, it’s important to understand this change to avoid delays or rejections.
What Is Form I-693?
Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record, is a form completed by a USCIS-designated civil surgeon to prove that an applicant is not inadmissible to the United States on health-related grounds. It includes a review of your vaccinations, screening for communicable diseases, and other health-related assessments.
What’s Changing?
Starting June 11, 2025, any Form I-693 signed by a civil surgeon on or after November 1, 2023, will only be valid while the immigration application it was submitted with is still pending.
If your application is withdrawn or denied, your Form I-693 becomes invalid, even if it was signed recently. If you later reapply or file a new immigration benefit request, you will need a brand-new medical exam.
Why the Change?
USCIS initially updated the policy in April 2024 to allow Form I-693s signed after November 1, 2023, to be valid indefinitely. However, they have since reversed that decision, explaining that indefinite validity could put public health at risk. By requiring timely medical exams for each application, USCIS ensures that individuals are evaluated based on their most current health status.
What Should Applicants Do Now?
If you are planning to file Form I-485 (Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status) or other forms requiring Form I-693:
- Submit your medical exam with your application.
- Do not rely on a previous medical exam if your earlier application was denied or withdrawn.
- Make sure your Form I-693 is signed by a civil surgeon approved by USCIS.
- Keep a copy of your medical exam for your records.
